Lopez vs Lopez Brings in Laughter and Reality

Three weeks ago, we saw the re-entry of comedian George Lopez to the sitcom genre, this time alongside his daughter Mayan. Lopez vs Lopez is the latest sitcom on NBC to be added to their Friday night lineup, one I quite honestly keep forgetting exists, joining junior series Young Rock.

At first glance, the opening episode of the series sparked many connections with George Lopez's hit series George Lopez, especially in relation to his comedy style and the usage of the former series' theme music "Low Rider" within the first several minutes. However, while the comedy may have carried over from the other series, the delivery is more in-line with ABC series The Conners.

For those familiar with The Conners, it is a series based on a working-class family trying to make ends meet, a spin-off of the popular 1990s series Roseanne. In this case, the Lopez family is also shown in a multigenerational and somewhat dysfunctional family, now coming together to create a 'new normal' within their lives. This connection is easily explained by stating that they share the same production company, Bruce Helford's Mohawk Productions.

With George and Mayan playing fictionalized versions of themselves, the former recently fit financial issues and has to move in with his previous estranged daughter and her new family, with his ex-wife constantly stopping by. The family dynamic is constantly hit-or-miss with each other, with the family consistently at odds with each other while yet still supportive of one another.

Dealing with social issues through the comedy style, the most recent episode dealt with the fact that Mayan (the character) doesn't understand or speak Spanish, despite having a Latinx background, causing a two-dimensional dilemma from both sides of the argument. This was paired with the stereotypical assumptions that followed later in the episode, and likely throughout the series in some capacity.

Less than a week shy of the fourth episode, I am honestly excited to continue watching this series and seeing how it progresses. Despite missing its initial airing on NBC for the past couple weeks, requiring me to catch up on Peacock this weekend, I'm looking forward to setting the DVR for the series!
